Australian Open 2025: Jack Draper victory secures blockbuster fourth round clash against Carlos Alcaraz
• 4 MINUTE READ
British No.1 Jack Draper has battled into the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time after defeating Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic in five-set thriller under the lights on the Margaret Court Arena.
For the second time in three days, Draper was tasked to take on an Australian player in front of a rowdy home crowd and once again emerged victorious as he knocked out Vukic in a 6-4, 2-6, 5-7, 7-6(5), 7-6(8) win in just over four hours.
Despite the 15th seed entering the tournament with a hip injury, Draper showcased some world-class tennis to come through his third consecutive five-set match.
The two-time ATP title winner has now set up a blockbuster clash against third seed Carlos Alcaraz. The pair last met at the 2024 cinch Championships where the Brit became the first, and only, person to defeat the Spaniard on the grass in two years, following his run to back-to-back Wimbledon titles.
"Aleks (Vukic) played incredible," Draper said in his on-court interview. "It was an unbelievably tough match. Both of us played a lot of sets in our opening rounds so I knew it was going to be a really tough match.
"There were so many ebbs and flows and it was just great tennis. I appreciate you guys (the crowd) staying out so late for us.
"I thought it was done and then he just came back from the dead. He was playing incredible. It was a great battle, two competitors going at it and that’s what sport is all about."
Of the two, it was Vukic who made the stronger start. The Australian won the toss and elected to receive – a move that paid off after a shaky opening service game from the British No.1 saw him concede the early break and take a 3-1 lead.
It took a few games for Draper to shake warm-up, likely caused by his five-set epic against Thanasi Kokkinakis just two days prior. Once he found his rhythm on serve, the Brit began slamming down the aces.
Sometimes, all it takes is a world-class shot to spark alight and a glorious shot around the net post on serve at 3-4 turned the tide for Draper who went on to win the next three games and take the first set.
Just like he did in the first, Vukic came out firing and this time, there was no stopping the Aussie. A deadly combination of some big serving and powerful groundstrokes that painted the lines, the world No.68 had the Brit well on the back foot as he opened up a 5-0 lead.
Draper refused to concede the set without a fight against the resilient Australian. He managed to recover one of the breaks but Vukic had built up too much of a lead and went on to level the score to a set apiece at the second time of asking.
A high-quality third set saw both players go toe-to-toe against each other with not a single break point opportunity coming for either player in the first 10 games. For Draper, three straight aces led him to a 5-4 lead before Vukic held to draw level. However, in a nightmare service game, Draper conjured up back-to-back double faults to hand Vukic a crucial break.
The two-time ATP titlist threatened to break straight back after taking a 40-15 lead but the Australian held his nerve well through some clinical serving and powerful hitting to take a two sets to one lead.
A tie-break was the only way to settle the fate of the fourth with neither player being able to find a breakthrough despite 10 break point chances between them. Vukic took his foot off the pedal momentarily and Draper made his move before opting for the serve-volley to force us into a decider.
The clock had struck midnight by the time we entered the fifth but there were little signs of mental or physical fatigue for the pair. They continued to fire home the winners, with Vukic wracking up a jaw-dropping 80 winners to Draper’s 69 across the match.
After some early breaks, both players stayed solid on serve as we headed towards a match-deciding tie-break. The Brit had led twice but couldn't shake off the pressure from Vukic who responded well both times.
A bold drop shot by the Brit on the Aussie's serve saw him find the net to set up two match points for Draper. Another thunderous serve sealed the deal for the 15th seed to secure his meeting against world No.3 Alcaraz in the fourth round.
Speaking on facing the four-time Grand Slam champion in the next round, Draper added, "Carlos is a special talent, an unbelievable player and someone I have a good friendship with.
"I think it’s going to be an incredible match and hopefully my body holds up, I can give it my all and it will be a great contest."
