Australian Open 2025: Henry Patten & Harri Heliovaara crowned men’s doubles champions
• 3 MINUTE READ
Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara have won the 2025 Australian Open men’s doubles title after a three-set thriller against third seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.
Patten and Heliovaara came back from a set down to defeat the Italians 6-7(16), 7-6(5), 6-3 in just over three hours on the Rod Laver Arena.
It’s a second Grand Slam title for the duo from Great Britain and Finland – adding to their Wimbledon title last summer. They have now won two of the last three major titles.
It was a gutsy final performance from Patten and Heliovaara who after losing 10 set points in the opener managed to turn the match around and seal an historic victory.
"What an evening," Patten said in his on court interview after the match. "What an amazing match. Second year in a row for you guys (Bolelli and Vavassori) and I now you will be back. You showed such good fight.
"Harri, what a journey we’ve been on, it’s truly special to share a court with you. I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else. Let’s keep going."
Heliovaara added: “Could I have done it without you Henry, I don’t think so. The most important thing in a team sport like doubles is find yourself a good partner and I’ve succeeded in that. Not only on the tennis court but off it we’re such good friends and I think that’s what brings us together and helps us win titles like this."
Patten becomes only the fourth British player to win multiple men’s doubles Grand Slam trophies in the Open Era, joining Roger Taylor, Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury.
He is also one of only three British players to win the men’s doubles title in Melbourne (Murray in 2016 and Salisbury in 2019).
Patten is currently up to world No.3 in the live ATP rankings.

A shaky start on Patten’s serve gave the Italians a break lead right from the off - their only break of the match. Patten and Heliovaara had break point opportunities on three of the next four service games but couldn’t find a way to capitalise.
They were finally rewarded for their efforts with a slice of luck in the business end of the set. Vavassori stretched over the net on a volley at 5-4, 30-30 and on their sixth break point, the Wimbledon champions finally struck back with a wicked return from Heliovaara.
However, the sixth seeds would rue their missed opportunities. With their set point count hitting 10, the two teams battled away until 16-16 in the tie-break. A crucial mini break on the Patten serve provided the platform needed for Bolelli to serve out the opener after almost an hour and a half.
Once Patten and Heliovaara saw off a break point on their first service game of the second it was business as usual – both sides winning over 80% points on their first serves in an edgy second set.
Into the tie-break once again and this time Patten and Heliovaara only needed the one set point to level up – Vavassori hitting long on the final point.
Momentum now fully in Patten and Heliovaara’s favour, the 35-year-old Finnish star crushed a brilliant forehand return winner to break Bolelli’s service game as they went on to take a 3-0 lead in the decider.
With the championship on the line, Patten fought off two break points on his serve before the Brit hammered down an ace on match point and both players collapsed to the floor in celebration.
