Australian Open 2025: Hannah Klugman finishes as runner-up in girls’ doubles

Great Britain’s Hannah Klugman finished as runner-up in the Australian Open girls’ doubles with Emerson Jones after losing out to Annika Penickova and Kristina Penickova in straight sets.
The American twins managed to see out an impressive win against the second seeds 6-4, 6-2 in just over an hour on the 1573 Arena.
This marked Klugman’s second junior Grand Slam doubles final of her career so far, having also finished runner-up at Wimbledon two years ago with Isabelle Lacy.
Klugman – who is supported by our Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus – leaves Melbourne with yet another experience of playing in a big match at one of the four Slams, which she can take it to the rest of the season.
“It’s been a really enjoyable week playing with Emerson, I’ve loved it," said Klugman during the trophy presentation.
"Congrats to you guys as well and good luck in the final (to Kristina). It’s been a great trip."
Both teams struggled on serve throughout the opening set. Despite holding a 2-0 lead, Klugman and Jones were unable to capitalise, losing their next three service games to give the sixth seeds a platform to take a one set advantage.
The Americans got the breakthrough they wanted early in the second set – winning Klugman’s first service game and then cooly tucking away a volley off a drilled forehand from Jones to break on the Aussie’s serve at 2-2.
Klugman and Jones had their chances to come back. They had 0-30 on the next game but couldn’t get over the line, which proved the story of the set.
On a crucial deciding deuce point on Klugman’s serve, the four players got into a quality exchange at the net which resulted in the Briton pushing a lob just millimetres beyond the baseline.
Penickova showed some nerves serving on her first match point with a double fault but at the second time of asking on another deuce decider, Jones hit an unforced error on the forehand to secure the title for the American twins.
15-year-old Klugman has been at the top of the junior game over the past couple of years and in 2023 became the first British girl to win the prestigious Orange Bowl trophy.
She’s now reached two Grand Slam doubles finals as well as the quarter-final in singles at the US Open and is a former winner at the Junior National Championships.
The Wimbledon-native has also announced herself already on the professional stage as well, having become the youngest player to qualify for an ITF W100 event in Shrewsbury back in 2023.
The young Briton is supported by our Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus – the highest level of support for British rising stars with the best chance of reaching the WTA/ATP top 100 singles within five years.
Klugman is one of six British players to have competed across seven junior Grand Slam finals in the last two years.
She forms part of a strong group that includes 2023 Wimbledon boys’ singles champion Henry Searle and 2024 girls’ US Open winner Mika Stojsavljevic. Viktor Frydrych, Mimi Xu, Lacy and Klugman have all starred in doubles finals in Australia or at Wimbledon.
