Australian Open 2025: Alfie Hewett to face Stephane Houdet in first round as wheelchair draws are announced

• 2 MINUTE READ

A maximum of six Brits will contest the wheelchair tennis main draws at the 2025 Australian Open from 21-25 January, as the draws are announced.

This year will see the Australian Open introduce wheelchair qualifying draws for the first time.

The qualifying draw will give British No.2 Cornelia Oosthuizen the opportunity to contest one of the sport’s four majors for the first time and on the back of winning three singles tiles in 2024, including her first two titles at ITF 3 level.

Oosthuizen hopes to move even further forward when she plays Charlotte Fairbank for the chance to join Lucy Shuker in the women’s main draw.

Greg Slade faces Brazil's Leandro Pena in his quad singles qualifying match. Should he win that match, Slade could find himself playing Paralympic doubles partner Andy Lapthorne in the main draw.

The three-time Australian Open quad singles finalist and seven-time doubles champion Lapthorne is drawn to meet a qualifier in the first round.

Set to contest her 15th Australian Open since 2007 this year, British No.1 and three-time Australian Open singles semi-finalist Shuker will face South Africa’s world No.7 Kgothatso Montjane for the third time at a Grand Slam in her opening match.

Shuker is also set to embark on her second Australian Open doubles campaign alongside Japan’s Yui Kamiji, with whom Shuker reached the 2002 final with at Melbourne Park.

Once again Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid carry British hopes in the men’s wheelchair single.

While the 21-time Grand doubles champions will aim to make it six Australian Open doubles titles in a row, they also both arrive at Melbourne Park as former singles champions - Reid having won his maiden Grand Slam singles title in Australia in 2016 before Hewett triumphed in 2023.

On the back of reaching his first singles final of 2025 at the Melbourne Open Super Series, second seed Hewett faces world No.9 ranked Frenchman Stephane Houdet in his opening match on Tuesday, while world No.5 Reid will meet 2021 champion and world No.7 Joachim Gerard of Belgium.

Wheelchair singles draws

  • Alfie Hewett (GBR) (seeded 2) vs Stephane Houdet
  • Gordon Reid (GBR) vs Joachim Gerard (BEL)
  • Lucy Shuker (GBR) vs Kogthatso Montjane (RSA)
  • Andy Lapthorne (GBR) vs Qualifier

The doubles draws will be made at a later date.
