Our eyes may be firmly locked on the Lexus GB team as we get ready to cheer them on to what will hopefully be a first Billie Jean King Cup title.

That said, this year’s Finals are set to welcome one of the strongest and most exciting international line-ups in recent years, so we’ve picked out six players must-watch players of this year’s Billie Jean King Cup Finals.

Paula Badosa – Spain

Host nation Spain will be thrilled that their leading woman Paula Badosa has bounced back to blistering form ahead of the Finals, as they look to claim a first Billie Jean King Cup title in 26 years.

After a challenging 18 months, including a back injury that cast doubt on her career, the former world No.2 has surpassed expectations, particularly in the second half of the year.

Following a run to the fourth round at Wimbledon, the Spaniard was spurred on to a sublime couple of months that saw her claim her first title in two years at the Mubadala Citi Open before reaching the semis at the Cincinnati Masters and the quarter-final at the US Open.

Despite her experience competing on the WTA tour, the world No.11 has only featured in two Billie Jean King Cup ties for Spain - both of which came at the 2022 Finals in Glasgow where she beat then reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina before being defeated by Britain’s Harriet Dart.

That said, Badosa has found her form at the perfect time and with a home crowd behind her in Malaga, we can expect to see some outstanding performances from the four-time WTA titleholder.

Iga Swiatek - Poland

Poland’s Iga Swiatek is the highest-ranked player set for action in Malaga.

The world No.2 has been a dominant force once again on the WTA Tour this year, hauling her fourth French Open title, claiming four WTA 1000 titles and earning a bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games.

Swiatek has done a fantastic job of translating her tour-level form onto the Billie Jean King Cup stage in the past. The 23-year-old currently boasts a 9-2 win record in her singles matches and was a significant driver in Poland’s upset over former champions Switzerland in April’s qualifiers.

While there is little that Swiatek hasn’t achieved in the tennis world, a Billie Jean King Cup title is one of the accolades missing from her vast collection. Poland is yet to etch their name on the coveted trophy but with one of the world’s best tennis players on their team, it’s safe to say anything is possible.

Leylah Fernandez - Canada

Part of the Canadian team that took home their first Billie Jean King Cup crown at last year’s tournament, Leylah Fernandez will be gunning to guide her nation to back-to-back titles.

Fernandez produced a campaign for the ages at last year’s Finals in Seville. Despite being one of the youngest members of the team, there was no stopping the 22-year-old who won all five of her matches, including the final rubber against Jasmine Poalini to crown Canada champions for the first time.

Her run in Seville wasn’t just a one-time occurrence though. Fernandez has consistently brought her best to the weeks with Canada and holds a sensational 16-3 Billie Jean King Cup record.

The reigning champions will have a target on their back heading into Malaga but with another strong team assembled and a potential quarter-final clash against the Brits in contention, you’ll want to keep an eye out on Fernandez and the rest of the Canadian squad.

Jasmine Poalini – Italy

One of the breakthrough stars of the year – Jasmine Poalini will be eager to wrap up her 2024 season by bringing the Billie Jean King Cup trophy back to Italy.

Rolling the clock back to January where a then world No.29 Paolini enjoyed a Grand Slam best run to the fourth round of the Australian Open. Little did she know that would be just the beginning of an incredibly special season.

A maiden WTA 1000 title in Dubai, a career-high ranking of world No.4, a runner-up at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon and Olympic gold in the women’s doubles are just a few of the standout milestones the Italian has ticked off this year.

Poalini knows exactly what it takes to step up for her country in the big tournaments and formed part of the Italy team that were pipped to the silverware by Canada in last year’s final. However, the 28-year-old returns to the line-up once again and will undoubtedly be hungrier than ever to go one further in Malaga.

Katie Boulter – Great Britain

Katie Boulter will lead her country out on the biggest stage in women’s team tennis, as the Brits hunt down a maiden Billie Jean King Cup title.

The British No.1 built on her monumental progress from last season to reach new heights once again in 2024. This year, she's collected a further two tour-level titles at the San Diego Open and Rothesay Open Nottingham, reached the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles draw at the Paris Olympic Games and clocked a new career-high ranking of No.23.

A stalwart of the British squad in recent years, Boulter has racked up an impressive 12-4-win record across 12 ties – making her a dominant and reliable force for her country.

With the 28-year-old in blistering form, the question now is: can she lead Great Britain to Billie Jean King Cup glory for the first time?

Danielle Collins – United States

The resurgence of Danielle Collins has been one of the most inspiring stories that’s unfolded throughout the year on the WTA tour. In February, the 30-year-old announced that she’d be calling time on her career at the end of the year, but after a twist of fate that’s seen her skyrocket inside the top 10 after a sensational year, it looks like the story isn’t over yet.

Collins has been one of the standout stars of the women’s game this year, with a first WTA 1000 crown in Miami, the Charleston Open titles and a fourth round appearance at Wimbledon amongst her achievements.

Now, Collins is turning her attention to Malaga, where she’s preparing to spearhead the USA to what they hope will be a historic 19th Billie Jean King Cup title.

The world No.10 has accumulated an impressive 7-3 record at the tournament - losing just one match in the singles since making her debut against Australia in 2019 – and could be a force to be reckoned with over the next seven days.

The Billie Jean King Cup Finals will get underway on Wednesday 13 November, with Great Britain set to play their first match against Germany at 16:00 on Friday 15 November.
