Davis Cup team selections & potential debuts in Manchester – insights from Leon Smith & Jack Draper

Just days out from Great Britain’s opening clash of the Davis Cup Group Stages against Australia at Manchester’s AO Arena, the team are full of confidence ahead of what could be a challenging week.
If the Brit’s are to reach the Davis Cup Final 8 in Malaga later this year, they will have to get through Group B with 2022 runners-up and second seeds, Australia, 10-time champions, France, and a Swiss team led by three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka.
But having picked what he believes is Great Britain’s strongest squad – Davis Cup Captain and LTA Head of Men’s Tennis, Leon Smith, thinks this team gives the Brits the best chance at making a push for the title once again.
“I think we’ve got our best five here,” said Smith. “We’ve got lots of strength and depth, especially on the doubles side, but this is the best five here and I’m sure about that. I’m delighted to have different options.”
With an impressive line-up, including British No.1 Cam Norrie, Citi Open champion Dan Evans, three-time major winner and former world No.1 Andy Murray, rising star Jack Draper and Wimbledon champion Neal Skupski – the biggest question for Smith is going to be what team he selects.
Having one doubles specialist, but several players who can play in both the singles and doubles rubbers, there are many different combinations that the British captain can choose from. Smith gave an insight into how he goes about choosing his team for these events.
“To be honest it’s a mix of everything, you can’t think too much about all the match ups because a lot of these teams, like us, have great depth and different options. The five we have here give us great options and it’s something we’ve just got to weigh up. At the end of the day, it will come down to a gut instinct once you get a feel for it.
“We’ve got all the data here and everyone has arrived fit and healthy, which is the main thing. Although Jack hasn’t played, he came with us to Colombia and other than that everyone else has a tonne of experience which is really good as well.”
Draper could be in line for his Davis Cup debut if selected to feature in any of GB’s three ties this week, which could see him become LTA Colour Holder No.323.
Fresh off the back of a career-best Grand Slam performance at the US Open, where he made the fourth round, Draper comes to Manchester in impressive form after an injury-hit season.
“I feel great – obviously New York has given me a bit of a boost after quite a tough season for myself,” the 21-year-old said. “When Leon asked me to join the guys I was really excited and honoured to be here. I haven’t been part of a Davis Cup group who are playing in our home country and it’s amazing to be part of this team and I’m very grateful for the selection.”
While a new member of the team, Draper has a great relationship with the rest of the team, who have all played a small part in his journey to the pros.
“It goes back a few years now when I was younger coming up the junior ranks – these guys were already at the top of the game and playing with them on a weekly/monthly basis at the National Tennis Centre was really good for me,” he said.
“I was extremely grateful to have that opportunity to get to know them and to be pushed to that level. It’s been amazing getting to know them better over the past few years and obviously they’re amazing players, but their great people as well. I think we’re a good team and we can do it.”
Draper and the rest of the British team kick off their Davis Cup campaign against Australia on Wednesday 13 September at 13:00. Watch all the action live on BBC iPlayer and on the BBC Sport website.
