Welsh teams in LTA County Cup action
• 2 MINUTE READ
The LTA County Cup events returned in April after over a year of absence from the domestic calendar due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The most recent event to run prior to this was the U18 event in February 2020 just prior to the first national lockdown.
The first age-groups back on court were the U12s and U14s although the traditional format of qualifying groups and national finals was revised to regionalised groups to lessen the need for extensive travel and overnight stays. There were no national finals either but nonetheless it was fantastic for players to be representing their county with their friends once again.
The teams from South Wales have been very impressive so far with the boys’ and girls’ teams winning their groups in both age-groups against Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Avon. The teams have played at several venues but it was the U12 Boys who were fortunate to be able to play in Wales at Bridgend LTC. The club was a fantastic setting for the event to be played at and the team captain, Rob Walbyoff, commented in his report that “The venue was great in every way and it was a brilliant weekend of tennis for the team.”
The North Wales teams were placed into very strong groups courtesy of having some excellent tennis counties as their close neighbours. The teams have done their best and learned a lot from playing at a very high level of junior county tennis against Cheshire, Yorkshire and Lancashire. Team morale has been good and there have been some notable performances.
The teams of between four to six players have been led superbly by our county captains who have all needed to prepare thoroughly for the events to ensure that players were safe and that necessary risk mitigations in relation to Covid-19 were in place.
Following on from the first two age-groups there are upcoming events for the U9, U10 and U11 age-groups over the next six weeks. If you’re keen to learn more about the LTA County Cup events you can do so through the LTA website here.
