Niall Pickerd-Barua enjoyed double title success at the Scottish Junior Open, taking the Boys’ under-14 singles title, and then teaming up with fellow Welsh player Evan Lendrum to win the under-14 doubles.
Niall, seeded four, faced top seed Harry Cornhill in the final, following a semi-final win against Chenming Dong. Niall secured victory against Harry in straight sets, but was pushed hard as it finished 7-5, 7-6 (2).
Niall and Harry met again in the final of the Boys’ under-14 doubles. It was Niall, along with Evan, who came out on top against Harry and his partner Robbie Taylor 7-6, 6-3 to lift the silverware. The Welsh pair had earlier come through a nail-biting semi-final as they clinched the deciding set match tie-break 10-8 from 5-8 down.
Tennis Wales Head of Performance Chris Lewis said: “This was a fantastic double success for Wales at the Scottish Junior Open at Craiglockhart Tennis Centre. Niall was playing a year up so to be crowned champion was a fantastic result. Evan and Niall then winning the doubles tournament was the icing on the cake. Llongyfarchiadau both.”
