The inaugural Joyce Langham Senior Ladies tournament took place on 14 January at Cardiff Met Tennis Centre in memory of Joyce, who sadly passed away suddenly just before Christmas.
Robyn Dow and Rhian Griffiths | Freda Emery and Val Alder | Val Owen and Janet Evans |
13 pairs played in the tournament and in hard-fought groups the overall winners were Robyn Dow and Rhian Griffiths. Group 2 winners were Freda Emery and Val Alder and Group 3 winners were Val Owen and Janet Evans.
The tournament, which was organised by Liz Singer, saw a great standard of tennis and plenty of smiles, which is exactly what Joyce would have wanted.
Sarah Keogh kindly organised the trophy and the tournament is intended to be an annual event taking place in March/April from next year.
Joyce was a well-known, and much-loved figure on the tennis, and sporting scene. She played at Lisvane tennis club and was previously a member at Mackintosh, Whitchurch and Allt-yr-yn tennis clubs. Her passing was a great shock and tragedy for her family and friends and leaves a gaping hole in their lives. She was a fantastic all-round sports person and played tennis, squash, and hockey for Wales. The most memorable thing about Joyce was her big smile, warm friendships, and sense of fun, as well as her brilliant drop volleys.
Joyce leaves behind husband Terry, son Philip, daughter-in-law Jo and grandson Harry.
