• 3 MINUTE READ

Felix Bockelmann Evans began 2025 in spectacular fashion, claiming victory at the Progress Tour Event held at Cardiff Metropolitan University last weekend.

The win earned Felix £1,000 in prize money and a coveted wildcard entry into the qualifying draw of a $25K ITF men’s event in the UK.

Felix, a part of the Tennis Wales and Cardiff Met national performance programme was unseeded for the season opening event, but he defeated higher ranked opposition to win the final, clinching an emotional victory on home soil in Wales.

Speaking in his post-match interview with Cardiff Met Tennis, Felix expressed his surprise and joy: “I can’t really say much; it’s an amazing feeling. I was almost crying when I won. I really wasn’t expecting it…I just tried to get the basics right.” Looking ahead, the 17-year-old has set his sights on upcoming Junior ITF events and remains optimistic about his potential future: “If I keep this up, who knows—maybe a few J100 events or even Wimbledon!”

Callum Findley, National Performance and University Head Coach for the Tennis Wales and Cardiff Met 14+ programme, praised Felix's efforts: “It was a great result for Felix. The hard work he’s been putting in week after week is really starting to pay off. He raised his level significantly in this competition and managed to win an event where he wasn’t expected to come out on top. Felix is part of a strong group in our 14+ programme, and it’s fantastic to see these players achieving success in such tough competitions.”

Felix’s path to the title was nothing short of extraordinary. Starting the competition in the qualifying rounds, he played all seven rounds of the event, becoming the only player to do so. His dominance was evident as he didn’t drop a single set until the final.

In the championship match, Felix showcased grit and resilience, coming from behind to defeat 32-year-old Marshall Tutu, a former ATP World No. 1077.

Felix’s tournament results:

  • Qualifying Round 1: Defeated Joseph McLaughlin, 6-3, 6-0
  • Qualifying Final: Defeated Louis Keenan, 6-1, 6-1
  • Round of 32: Defeated Eliot Glaysher, 6-2, 6-4
  • Round of 16: Defeated Younes Jenkins, 6-2, 6-2

  • Semifinal: Defeated Joe Leather 6-3, (withdrawal due to injury)

Felix’s determination and performance serve as an inspiration to other young Welsh players aiming to make their mark in the game. With his wildcard entry secured, 2025 promises to be an exciting year for this rising star.
