Caerphilly Park Tennis Courts Reopen After Renovation

• 3 MINUTE READ

The Blackwood Showfields tennis courts have officially reopened following extensive renovations, managed by the LTA in partnership with Caerphilly County Borough Council and supported by the LTA Tennis Foundation. This renovation is part of the largest transformation of park tennis facilities across Britain, covering six park sites within the Caerphilly area.

The renovation project, which represents a £377,828.22 investment, aims to rejuvenate tennis courts across the local area, significantly enhancing the quality of sporting facilities available to the community. The reopening event at Blackwood Showfields was attended by local authority representatives and members of the LTA and featured various tennis sessions for community members.

The extensive refurbishment includes resurfacing, repainting, new fencing, nets, and gate systems, ensuring the courts are durable and of high quality for years to come. This initiative is part of the Parks Tennis Project by the LTA, which seeks to revitalise thousands of public tennis courts nationwide, promoting physical activity and accessibility to the sport.

In addition to the physical upgrades, the courts will host weekly Barclays Free Park Tennis sessions with equipment provided, as well as Local Tennis Leagues for friendly and social competition. Courts can be easily booked through the Leisure Lifestyle App.

Membership options include:

  • Pay and Play: £4.50 per hour for two people.
  • Student Annual Tennis Pass: £19
  • Annual Tennis Pass: £39

The household annual pass, at just £39, allows families to play weekly for less than 50p per player per game, ensuring affordability and accessibility.

Rob Hartshorn, Head of Public Protection, Community & Leisure Services at Caerphilly County Borough Council, who cut the ribbon to open the courts, said: “These newly refurbished courts are a fantastic addition to our community. They provide a great opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy tennis and stay active. We are proud to have partnered with the LTA and the LTA Tennis Foundation on this project, which will benefit our residents for years to come.”

Julie Porter, Chief Operating Officer at the LTA, commented: “After months of hard work, we’re delighted to see park tennis courts across Caerphilly officially back open to the public, and in better shape than ever. Public tennis courts are such vital facilities for getting active, and we want as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, to pick up a racket and enjoy playing tennis. Thanks to this investment, the sport will be opened up to more players for years to come.”
