TS Open Tour recap, Reid wins Cajun Classic, Scots represent at County Cup

Scottish Indoor Open Championships recap 

Ewen Lumsden and Mia Wainwright were crowned TS Open Tour title champions over the weekend at the Scottish Indoor Open Championships. 

Lumsden was seeded top in the men’s draw and opened with a win over Finnian Bult before downing Liam Hignett in the quarter-finals 7-5 6-1.  

Lumsden went on to defeat Thomas Drayton 6-2 6-2 to book his place in the final where he took on University of Stirling’s Cameron Fryer, who had beaten Harry Skinner in the other semi-final. 

In the final, Lumsden proved too strong, overcoming Fryer 6-4 6-2 to take home his first TS Open and Lexus British Tour title of the year. 

Meanwhile, in the women’s draw, fourth seed Mia Wainwright started with commanding wins over Maya Ichim and Lily Harper to move into the semi-finals.  

Wainwright was set to play top seed Emma Wilson in the semi-final but received a walkover due to Wilson’s withdrawal.  

The final saw Wainwright face off against Teodora Prisadnikova, who is no stranger to competing for TS Open Tour titles. However, it was Wainwright who emerged victorious with a 6-3 6-2 win. 

The next instalment of the TS Open Tour takes place at Whitecraigs over the Easter weekend.

Reid and Hewett win Cajun Classic 

Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewett were back in action at the Cajun Classic, Louisiana where they picked up another doubles title. 

Reid and Hewett were dominant in the pursuit of their third doubles crown of the season. After receiving a bye as the top seeds, the pair saw off French duo Geoffrey Jasiak and Oliver Langlois 6-2 6-1 in the opening round to move on to the semi-finals. 

In the final four, the Brits bested Spain’s Martin De la Puente and Belgium’s Joachim Gerard 6-4 6-3 to book a spot in the final of the ITF Super Series. 

Reid and Hewett took on Japanese pair Takuya Miki and Tokito Oda in the championship match, going onto put in another commanding performance to beat the second seeds 6-2 6-2.

Junior Scots represent at County Cup 

Scottish juniors travelled south of the border to represent the four counties last week at the 18U County Cup competition.  

In the girls’ events, West of Scotland topped Group 4A. The team made up of Anna Mcknight, Eleanor Cochran, Olivia Maguire, Emma Barlow, Megan O’Brien, Elisa Gibson, and Poppy Bonar went undefeated over the weekend to take first place in Southampton. 

East of Scotland girls also topped their group in 4B, besting Northamptonshire, Somerset and Wiltshire. Anushka Anoj, Hanna Augustynska, Lucy Beeston, Eva Dorado, Shaylin Holt, Aadya Iyer Chadalawada, Lilliana Macfarlane and Jessica Rae were part of the winning East team. 

North of Scotland had an impressive weekend in Division 1 where they finished runner-up to Surrey. The team consisted of Alexander English, Logan Gillespie, Ollie Anderson, Gregor McIver, Thomas Dixon, Isaac King, Ben Cooper and Harry Carman. 

The boys took wins over Hertfordshire and Kent, losing out to eventual winners Surrey. 

East of Scotland boys took second place in Division 3A behind South Wales, while West of Scotland finished second place in Division 3B. South of Scotland also took silver in Group 6A. 

North of Scotland finished their weekend in second place in Group 5A whilst South of Scotland were third in 6B. 

Charlie Robertson reaches doubles final in Thailand 

Charlie Robertson was back in action after his impressive week in Glasgow. Robertson competed at the J300 Nonthaburi, Thailand and finished runner up in the boys’ doubles with partner Alan Wazny from Poland. 

The duo started strong with a straight sets win over Bill Chan and Ryo Tabata 6-4 6-4 in the first round.  

They then overcame India’s Rethin Kumar and Caheer Warik in a thrilling 6-3 3-6 14-12 win. The pair went on to secure their spot in the final after beating Artem Bogomolov and Egor Pleshivstev 6-2 6-4.  

It wasn’t to be in the final for Robertson and Wazny as they lost out to South Korean pair Yeonsu Jeong and Jangjun Kin 3-6 0-6.  

Aidan McHugh reaches final in France 

Aidan McHugh reached the M15 Poitiers doubles final last week in France. McHugh teamed up with Belgium’s Buvaysar Gadamauri to take a straight sets win in round one. 

The pair then convincingly beat Kylian Collignon and Emilien Demanet 6-0 6-1 to progress to the semi-final. 

It was a Scottish clash in the semi-final as McHugh and Gadamauri faced Hamish Stewart and George Houghton. McHugh and Gadamauri pulled through 6-3 7-5 to progress to the final. 

The pair were bested by French duo Yanis Ghazouani Durand and Loann Massard 2-6 6-7 in the championship decider.
