McBride wins third Australian Open title, TS Open Tour visits Stirling and Fearnley makes GB debut

• 4 MINUTE READ

Anna McBride cemented her top spot in the rankings after winning her third consecutive Intellectual Disability Championships singles title at the Australian Open.

After defeating doubles partner Kelly Wren and Breanna Tunny in the opening rounds, she closed out the title with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over French second seed Eva Blanc in the final.

Not only did she lift the trophy, but the University of Stirling student only dropped a mere four games in her run to the title.

Blanc, however, got her revenge in the women’s doubles – lifting the title alongside her Belgian doubles partner Hanne Lavreysen.

The top seeds defeated McBride and Wren en route to the title. McBride and Wren managed to secure victories elsewhere in the round-robin group, resulting in some well-earned runner-up silverware.

Meanwhile, Aidan Moody and partner Oliver Beadle finished runners-up in the men’s doubles, with their run including a well-earned victory over the Australian-French partnership of Damian Philips and Benjamin Coulier.

Another title for Oluwadare on TS Open Tour

Hephzibah Oluwadare won her second TS Open Tour title in two weeks at the University of Stirling Open, beating Heather Barlow 6-4, 6-0 in the final. Oluwadare came through the draw without dropping a set, adding to her Lexus British Tour Stirling title from last week.

In the men’s event, 2024 Leaderboard winner Nicolas Rosenzweig was the champion, sealing the title with a 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 win over Euan McIntosh.

Next up for the TS Open Tour is the Scottish Indoor Championships, beginning on 14 March.

Fearnley makes impressive Davis Cup debut

Jacob Fearnley made an impressive debut for Great Britain in the Davis Cup, winning his opening singles rubber against Kei Nishikori in Japan.

Fearnley won in straight sets to pull GB level at 1-1 in the tie after the opening day, however lost to 3-6, 6-7 (0) to Yoshihito Nishioka on day two.

GB were edged out 3-2 overall in the first round match, meaning they now face a relegation play-off in September.

Lumsden reaches Singapore semis

Maia Lumsden was in form as the WTA Tour visited Singapore, reaching the semi-finals of the women’s doubles with Harriet Dart before the pair had to withdraw.

Lumsden and Dart came through the first round of the Singapore Open in a dramatic 11-9 match tie-break against Amina Anshba and Renata Zarazua before a comfortable 6-0, 6-2 victory over Cristina Bucsa and Camila Osorio in the last eight.

However, the British pair had to withdraw before their semi-final against eventual champions Desirae Krawczyk and Giuliana Olmos.

Glasgow hosts ITF World Tennis Tour

We enjoyed a brilliant week as Tennis Scotland hosted a Lexus GB Pro Series event on the ITF World Tennis Tour – featuring players from around the world.

Alastair Gray and Valentina Ryser were crowed the singles champions after hard-fought wins in Sunday’s finals.

A strong crowed turned out to support the finalists, creating a great atmosphere at Scotstoun.

Earlier in the singles, Hamish Stewart won his opening round before being edged out over three sets by Henry Searle, while Ewen Lumsden’s campaign was ended by champion Gray.

In the doubles, Scott Duncan and James MacKinlay came through two rounds to reach the men’s semis, where they lost out to eventual winners Finn Bass and James Story, while Hephzibah Oluwadare and Emma Wilson teamed-up to also reach the last four. Their run also ended at the hands of the champions, Paris Corley and Tiphanie Lemaitre.
