Fearnley’s ‘awesome’ Australian Open, title for Reid and Scots success at Seniors
• 3 MINUTE READ
Jacob Fearnley’s meteoric rise continued at his first overseas Grand Slam as the young Scot chalked up two impressive wins at the Australian Open.
Fearnley, 23, beat home favourite Nick Kyrgios in straight sets before coming from a set down to beat Arthur Cazaux and secure a third-round meeting with world number two Alexander Zverev.
Despite going down in straight sets, Fearnley made life uncomfortable for his German opponent, before describing his Australian Open run as an “awesome experience”.
Fearnley only left university last summer but has now risen into the world’s top 100 after claiming four ATP Challenger Tour titles and pushing Novak Djokovic to the brink of a fifth set on Centre Court at Wimbledon. Next up, he’ll be joining the Great Britain team for the first time as they travel to Japan for the Davis Cup.
There were also Australian Open wins for Jamie Murray and Maia Lumsden, who reached the second round of the men’s and women’s doubles respectively alongside John Peers and Anna Siskova.
Murray also took part in the mixed doubles, while Cameron Norrie was beaten in the first round of the men’s singles by Matteo Berrettini.
First title of 2025 for Gordon Reid
Gordon Reid won his first title of the year at the Melbourne Open alongside his regular partner Alfie Hewett – an incredible 103rd title as a team.
Reid and Hewett beat Tom Egberink and Tokito Oda 7-5, 7-5 in the final, picking up the trophy for the second successive year.
The pair begin their Australian Open campaign this week, looking to make it six men's doubles titles in a row, while also competing in the singles.
Hamish Stewart reaches pro tour final
Hamish Stewart was in form on the ITF World Tennis Tour, reaching the final of the M15 Cadolzburg Open in Germany.
Eighth seed Stewart made the semi-finals without dropping a set, before coming through a tight battle with Max Wiskandy 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 to set up a final against Justin Engel.
A tight first set was edged by Engel on a tie-break before the German clinched the title 6-3 in the second.
