Exciting times for Ewen Lumsden as TS Open Tour helps fuel international success
• 3 MINUTE READ
Ewen Lumsden has been making strides on the ITF pro tour, picking up his first singles title in Tunisia and enjoying success on the doubles court.
After rising more than 300 places to 764 in the world, Ewen looked back on a successful few months ahead of the World Tennis Tour event in Glasgow, which begins on Tuesday 22 October.
Last year’s runner-up at the TS Open Tour Finals is using the confidence gained from high-quality domestic events to make his mark in the international circuit.
You recently won your first pro singles title, how was that experience and what did that mean for you?
It was a great experience to win my first title. The week before hadn’t gone so well, but I got a good win in the first round in a long three setter. I managed to get through that and picked up some good momentum, kept it going and had some big wins. That gave me some confidence and I took it match by match and was playing the big points and break points well, and just really happy it all came together.
You’re also playing well on the doubles circuit, having collected three titles this year. How’s that been?
I’ve been playing well in doubles, so it’s been great to get some titles. I’ve been serving and returning well, which I'm happy with. I’ve been playing a lot with (US) college guys as I think we have good connections on court with the college background, having played in similar environments out there. We’ve been playing aggressive doubles and it’s been great to get those wins.
You’ve been on form in Tunisia, picking up 10 singles wins in a row at one stage - has anything changed for you or in your game to start consistently winning pro tour matches?
I think getting used to the conditions [has helped]. The first couple of weeks playing out there were tough to adjust to as it’s a lot different to playing in the UK. I really started to get used to the courts. They’re slow which suits my game, and I was able to find some confidence after that. Once I beat some higher ranked players, I really felt I could do it against anyone in these draws.
You’re a top performer on the TS Open Tour when you’re in Scotland - how has playing that helped you prepare for matches on the ITF Tour?
The TS Open Tour events have helped me a lot. Financially, they’ve helped me to travel to Monastir and other places. The British Tours have also helped, so I’ll definitely be continuing to play those events outside of playing on the pro tour.
You’ve entered the ITF event in Glasgow this coming week - how do you feel about the prospect of playing at home?
Yeah, really looking forward to playing in Glasgow. I’m feeling good with my game, so excited to get out there and have some of my friends and family watching. Hopefully it’ll be a good week.
Your ranking has been moving quickly recently, so what are your goals as you wrap up the year and move into 2025?
Winning the M15 was big for my ranking. I was outside the top 1000 which isn’t ideal since you have to come through qualifying each week. Now I've moved up, I’m getting into main draws. The goals are to keep improving and hopefully that leads to some more strong results before the end of the year. I’m just looking to keep building my game going into 2025, I’m excited to see where that takes me.
Ewen is set to compete on home turf this week in the Lexus GB Pro Series at Scotstoun Leisure Centre in Glasgow. Entry is free for spectators all week.
