Day four: British finalist guaranteeds as trio progress into semi-finals
Sunday's women's final is guaranteed to featured a British player after Mimi Xu, Mika Stojsavljevic and Lily Miyazaki all punched their tickets to the semi-finals of the Lexus Wrexham Open.
Local favourite Xu continued her strong campaign in Wrexham as she knocked out sixth seed Harmony Tan 6-3, 6-3 to become the first Brit to reach the final four.
Tan coughed up an untimely double fault at 3-3 in the opener to hand the 18-year-old Brit her fourth break point of the set and this time, Xu converted the opportunity before breaking for a second time to seal the set.
Xu, who is currently ranked world No.381, continued to dominate in the second and broke the Frenchwoman once again in the fourth game before seeing out the victory in an hour and 19 minutes.
She's now set for an all-British battle against compatriot Miyazaki in the semi-finals, after she fought back from a set down to beat qualifer Jana Otzipka 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
After dropping the first set, Miyazaki fought back by breaking opponent in the third and seventh games of the second. Stepping up to serve out the set and level the scoreboard, Miyazaki was forced to save four break points but held firm to escape unscathed and take us to a decider.
After applying the pressure on the Brits previous service game, Otzipka looked to be on her way to a clinical love hold and a 5-4 lead but Miyazaki won four points in a row to claim the advantage.
Spurred on by a home crowd behind her, the 29-year-old seized her opportunity - firing a thunderous backhand return which the Belgian launched wide to secure the decisive breakthrough and seal her place in the semi-finals.

Stojsavljevic put in a devastating display against Czech's Lucie Havlickova, winning 6-2, 6-2 to seal her spot in the final four.
Having ran away with the opening set, the 16-year-old kept her foot on the gas pedal early in the second as she raced out to another early break.
Havlickova struggled to find any answers to the Stojsavljevic's aggression and intensity from the baseline. Up 4-2 and with more break points in sight, the Briton launched a red-hot forehand down the line to seal the double break before keeping her composure to see out the win on her fourth match point.
Stojsavljevic is yet to drop a set this tournament.
She'll be hoping to make it back-to-back finals when she takes on Estonia's Elena Malygina, who defeated Britain's Ella McDonald 6-1, 6-0 earlier today.
The semi-finals will take place on Saturday 25 October.
Past results at the Lexus Wrexham Open
It was another action-packed day at the Lexus Wrexham Open, with four British stars punching their tickets to the quarter-finals.
Wins rolled in for Mimi Xu, Lily Miyazaki, Mika Stojsavljevic and Ella McDonald, who all eased to straight set victories in front of the home crowd.
Rising British star Xu became the first British player to reach the quarter-finals after she beat qualifier Andre Lukosiute 7-5, 7-5.
"Obviously, it was definitely a tough match," said Xu. "She came out at the start of both sets hitting some amazing shots and all credit to her for putting me under pressure straightaway, but I'm proud of myself how I fought back from being down a double break in both sets, and then I just stuck with it and I'm happy to be through."
it was a slow start for local favourite Xu who quickly trailed the Lithuanian 5-2 in the opening set. However the 18-year-old managed to settle into the contest just in time - breaking Lukosiute as she stepped up to serve for the set before reeling off the next four games in a row to take the lead.
Lukosiute looked to be on the comeback as she broke Xu twice in the opening three games of the second, but the British star once again dug deep to claw back level before dealing one final blow to secure her place in the quarters.
Next up she'll take on sixth seed Harmony Tan.
An all-British battle saw 16-year-old Stojsavljevic overcome Amarni Banks 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and a half.
Stojsavljevic - who arrived at the tournament having claimed her second pro-level title at the W35 event in Birmingham - needed just one break in each set to wrap up victory over her compatriot.
In the next round, she'll face Czechia's Lucie Havlickova in a bid to reach the semi-finals.
Miyazaki also clinched a statement win as she knocked out top seed Jessika Ponchet 6-2, 6-4.
The 29-year-old broke the Frenchwoman three times across the hour and 15 minute match to secure her spot in the last eight.
"I'm definitely very pleased today with my performance, compared to yesterday," said Miyazaki. "She was the favourite on paper, so I could play a bit more freely and I think I managed to do that, so, yes, I'm happy with my performance.
"Jessika's a really tough opponent. I've played her many times before so I knew what to expect, but I think I managed to neutralise her weapons and I managed to put my game out there."
Meanwhile, McDonald concluded the quartet of British wins after she secured a 6-3, 7-5 win over Ivana Sebestova.
McDonald will next play Elena Malygina after the Estonian's straight sets victory over Katarina Kuzmova from Slovakia.
British trio Mimi Xu, Mika Stojsavljevic, Lily Miyazaki and Ella McDonald all came through with victories on day two at the Lexus Wrexham Open to book their place in the second round.
British rising star Xu came back from a set down to defeat Lithuanian third seed Justina Mikulskyte 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and 19 minutes.
The local favourite struggled on serve in the opening set but settled into her rhythm early in the second. Despite being broken at 5-3 serving for the second set, the 18-year-old quickly shrugged off the disappointment and sealed another break of her own to level the scores.
In a much more one-sided third set, Xu lost just three points behind her serve to set up a second round clash with Andre Lukosiute.
Former junior US Open champion Stojsavljevic made light work of her first round clash with eighth seed Julia Avdeeva - winning 6-4, 6-2.
Straight off the back of winning the Lexus British Pro Series Birmingham last week, Stojsavljevic needed just an hour and 14 minutes to book a meeting with fellow Brit Amarni Banks in the next round.
Former British No.4 Miyazaki won a nail-biting clash with 17-year-old Ruby Cooling 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-4 in one of the matches of the tournament so far.
Miyazaki saved break point serving at 5-5 in the second set and needed seven set points before managing to set up the decider. Cooling fought back from 5-2 down in the third, but on the second time of asking, Miyazaki was able to serve out the victory.
Next up, she’ll play either top seed Jessika Ponchet who knocked out Britain’s Indianna Spink 7-5, 6-2.
20-year-old McDonald sailed through to the second round with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over compatriot Alicia Dudeney.
McDonald – who, like Xu, is supported by the LTA Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus – saved two break points on a critical game at 3-2 in the opening set, before storming on to win nine of the next 11 games and wrap up the win in an hour and 15 minutes.
In the second round she will face Czech Republic’s Ivana Sebestova – who knocked out seventh seed Valentina Ryser 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 earlier in the day.
However, Britain’s Alice Gillan lost out to Sweden’s Kajsa Rinaldo Persson 6-3, 6-1 in the first match of day two.
23-year-old Amarni Banks sealed the first British win at the Lexus Wrexham Open – defeating Finland’s Laura Hietaranta 6-4, 6-0 to book her place in the second round.
Banks got the crucial break at 3-3 in the opening set before starting to pull away against the world No.314.
Hietaranta had to take a medical time out trailing 3-0 in the second set and once they returned to court, it was all one way traffic for Banks.
The Briton saw out a convincing victory in an hour and 30 minutes and will now face either 2024 Junior US Open champion Mika Stojsavljevic or eighth seed Julia Avdeeva.
20-year-old Ranah Stoiber put in a dominant opening set against fifth seed Raulca Georgiana Serban but narrowly lost out in the decider 1-6, 6-0, 7-6(5) in two hours and 34 minutes.
The young Brit saved a match point on serve trailing 5-4 in the third set, but at the third time of asking, Serban managed to grind out the victory in the tie-break.
Freya Christie also faced a tough challenge in the form of Estonia's Elena Malygina, bowing out 6-0, 6-4, while 17-year-old Tegan Bush lost to Belgium's Jana Otzipka 6-4, 6-1.
